What is AI security?

Where conventional cybersecurity focuses on protecting networks, endpoints and known software vulnerabilities, AI Security concerns itself with the unique properties of AI. How is AI security different from traditional information security and cybersecurity?
Traditional information security programmes (ISO 27001, NIST CSF and similar) define how organisations manage risk through policy, access control, audit and incident response. The cybersecurity tools that implement those programmes’ technical controls were built for a relatively stable software estate: patch known vulnerabilities, monitor network traffic for malicious signatures, and control who has access to what.
AI Security cannot rely on either assumption alone, because AI systems behave probabilistically, not deterministically, and their risk surface extends beyond code into model behaviour, training data, validation evidence and the governance accountability for decisions a model influences.
Three differences matter most at the technical layer:
Attack surface. A traditional application has a defined set of inputs and outputs. An AI system, particularly a large language model, accepts open-ended natural language input and produces open-ended output. That makes it harder to define what ‘malicious’ looks like and easier for an attacker to find phrasing that bypasses controls.
Model behaviour. Traditional software does what its code instructs. AI systems do what their training data and prompts shape them to do, and that behaviour can drift over time, be influenced by adversarial data, or be manipulated by carefully crafted instructions.
Supply chain. Most UK organisations do not build their own AI. They consume it through third-party tools, foundation models and embedded features in existing software. That means your AI Security posture depends in part on suppliers whose practices you cannot directly observe.
And one difference matters most at the programme layer:
Governance, validation and assurance. Traditional information security programmes can demonstrate that a control is in place and operating. AI Security has to demonstrate that a model continues to behave correctly as data, prompts, regulations and downstream use cases evolve. That requires validation evidence collected over time, not a point-in-time audit, as well as a named accountability path for decisions the model influences. Existing programmes were not built to produce either.

What are the main AI security risks UK organisations face?

Prompt injection — and the related class of attacks emerging from AI agents and MCP servers — is where an attacker crafts input that overrides the AI system’s instructions, potentially causing it to leak data, take unauthorised actions or produce harmful output. Indirect prompt injection, where the malicious instruction is hidden in a document the AI is asked to summarise, can be particularly difficult to detect.
Data leakage through LLMs can happen when staff paste confidential information into public AI tools. The data may be retained, used in future training, or exposed through the provider’s logs. For NHS trusts handling patient data, local authorities holding citizen records and professional services firms managing privileged client information, this represents a potential regulatory risk under UK GDPR.
Model poisoning matters where an organisation trains or fine-tunes its own models. An attacker who can influence the training data may shape the model’s behaviour in ways that are hard to detect and may only surface when triggered by specific inputs.
Supply chain vulnerabilities can arrive through third-party AI tools, plugins and foundation model APIs. These dependencies may not be subject to the same security scrutiny as your core systems.
Output handling failures occur when AI systems generate content that is passed to other systems for execution. If a generated SQL query, shell command or API call is trusted without validation, the AI can become a vector for the same injection attacks that have plagued traditional applications for decades.
Governance and accountability gaps surface when an AI system contributes to a decision that affects a customer, patient or employee. Who is accountable? How should a CISO approach AI Security today?
Start with visibility. Many UK organisations underestimate how much AI is already in use across their operations because much of it arrived through SaaS features and individual staff initiative rather than formal procurement. Until you have an honest inventory, other steps are largely guesswork.

Is AI security regulated in the UK?
The UK has no single AI Security regulation, but several existing frameworks apply.
UK GDPR governs how AI systems handle personal data. The NCSC has published guidelines for secure AI development. The ICO, FCA, CQC and NHS England are increasingly active in setting expectations for AI use in their respective sectors. The EU AI Act may affect UK organisations that operate in or sell to the EU.
